As Nigeria celebrates her 54th Independence, Lagos state governor, Babatunde Fashola, has advocated peaceful co-existence, cleanliness and rule of law as the most viable means of building a virile and prosperous nation.
In his goodwill message to Nigerians, Fashola maintained that it is only in the atmosphere of peaceful and harmonious co-existence that development and progress could be guaranteed adding that the most important string that binds the people together is their common humanity.

2015 Election: Will Abike Dabiri Run For Governor of Lagos?

Honourable Abike Dabiri-Erewa is currently under pressure to run in the Lagos 2015 governorship elections, City People reports.
The Federal House of Representatives member was said to have been hosted by a group of young Nigerians, including award-winning journalists, Tolu Ogunlesi and Chude Jideonwo, at a programme titled “The Future Lagos”.
While there, Mrs. Dabiri-Erewa was reportedly asked if she would contest for governorship of the state, to which she responded “Would you like me to contest?”
When the participants answered in the affirmative, she said:
“My goal at all times is to make life easier for the common man, woman and child. I don’t doubt my capacity and capability if my party considers me worthy of the position”.
The legislator was also recently asked by City People if she would run for office and she is said to have stated that she is currently under intense pressure to run for the governorship of the state.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa  was elected in 2003 as a representative of the Ikorodu Federal Constituency. The question now is, will she run for Governor of Lagos?

Two Nigerian sex slaves rescued in Burkina Faso (See Photo)

Two teenage Nigerian girls, Rejoice Chioma Israel, 16, (centre) and Rosemary ‎Uchenna Emmanuel, 19 (right), who were trafficked to Burkina Faso to become sex workers in the country have been rescued, PM News reports.

The two girls left Nigeria on 11 July with a man who promised to take them to Malaysia via Burkina Faso for a better life. The trafficker explained to them that they will be given fresh passports and some vaccines in Burkina Faso before proceeding to Malaysia for well paid jobs.

According to Amnesty International, Iranian authorities confirmed that Reyhaneh Jabbari will be hanged.

Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde is known to many. Her acting prowess is arguably in a class by itself and her being nominated as one of the world's 100 most influential persons by TIME magazine a couple of years back must have paved the way for her present national recognition by the Federal Government. Frankly speaking, I personally think she has more depth in acting than her 'rival' Genevieve Nnaji. I have worked with both of them in the past and also studied their acting styles. Omotola has the gift of role immersion. She gives everything into her characters. There is an organic style of interpretation she is gifted with. Very few actors have that. She Is not a Method Actor, mind you but she has delivered roles which many method actors would give her a standing ovation for.

60 Nigerian soldiers to face trial for mutiny today

60 Nigerian soldiers including 2 corporals, 9 Lance corporals and 49 privates who refused to partake in an operation in Maiduguri on August 4th will be arraigned before a military court today Sept. 30th at the Sani Abacha barracks in Abuja for committing two offenses, conspiring to mutiny and mutiny.

According to the charge sheet, on August 4th the soldiers had refused to join the "111 SF Bn troops" led by Col E. A. Aladeniyi to Maimalari Barracks for an operation, thereby committing an offence tagged "conspiring to mutiny" against the authority of the division, an offence punishable under Section 91(1) of the Penal Code Cap P89 LFN 2004 as well as outright mutiny which is punishable under Section 52(1)(a) of the AFA CAP A20 LFN 2004.

Boko Haram men in the early hours of yesterday September 29th launched an attack in Kubi and Watu villages in Michika LGA of Adamawa state, killing scores and burning over 500 houses.

According to a resident of the village, the sect men came very early in the morning when people were still sleeping, setting their homes ablaze and causing them to burn to death in the resulting inferno.

Former Lagos state governor Asiwaju Bola Tinubu believes that there are no obvious reasons why Nigeria should celebrate its 54th Independence in an elaborate fashion.
In a statement released on Monday, the Jagaban of Borgu said that Nigeria is yet to attain its potentials despite all its staggering natural resources. He lamented the suffering of Nigerians which he believes was caused by poor leadership.
He said: “We commemorate this Independence Day because the nation has survived despite its many challenges. We dare not celebrate because the nation has not flourished as it should. 54 years our national trek began with hope and promise, peace and unity.
“Today, the nation staggers beneath the weight of trouble stacked upon problem multiplied by hardship. Peace and unity seem to have yielded the moment to violence and discord. We exist as a political unit on a map but we do not prosper as brothers and sisters in one nation, under one flag and pursuant to one accord. We have lost our road and now seem to be on the road of the lost. I am proud to be a Nigerian and would not attach my life to any other nation but genuine patriotism should not induce blindness. We are burdened by too many resolvable challenges that remain unresolved,” he said.

Canada’s Encana agrees to buy Texas oil for $7.1 bn

Canadian energy company Encana on Monday said it has agreed to buy Texas’s Athlon Energy for $7.1 billion, in a bid boost the Calgary-based natural gas producer’s shift into oil.
Encana would pay $5.93 billion in cash for the US company, as well as assume $1.15 billion of Athlon’s debt, according to a statement.

Oil Subsidy Trial: Court Summons EFCC Witness

A Lagos High Court Judge, Justice Lateefat Okunnu today issued a witness summon against a witness of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Engineer Kehinde Akinmoloya in the ongoing trial of an oil marketer, Opeyemi Ajuyah over allegations of fuel subsidy fraud.
Ajuyah and her company, Majope Investment are standing trial alongside another oil marketer, Abdullahi Alao and his company Axe Energy Nigeria Limited and Olanrewaju Olalusi, a staff of Sterling Bank Plc over an alleged N1.1 billion fuel subsidy fraud.
At the resumed hearing of the matter today, EFCC prosecuting counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo told the court that Engr. Akimolayan, who is a principal witness in the trial, has refused to honour invitations to give evidence in the matter.

300 Terrorists Surrender In Cameroon (Read)

According to reports, 300 members of terrorist sect, Boko Haram have surrendered to the Cameroonian military.
The terrorists reportedly laid down their arms over the space of three weeks and also requested asylum in Cameroon.
The development was confirmed by the country’s Defence Spokesman Lt. Col. Didier Badjeck to The Associated Press.
Badjeck however added that no decision had been taken as regards the fate of the insurgents.
The alleged mass surrender comes after Cameroonian troops reportedly captured a Boko Haram Commander identified as Abakar Ali.
